Is Hormone Therapy Safe?

Wondering if hormone therapy is safe? While the practice has been around for ages, there are still some concerns people have about it due to the potential risks. With any medical treatment comes an array of benefits, but there are some downsides too. Thankfully, with hormone therapy, the risks are low, and it is relatively safe when practiced by qualified individuals. Ready to find out more?

Hormone therapy

Below is a quick overview of hormone therapy, including an explanation of what it is, the safety concerns and the associated risks. This information can be especially helpful to review when looking into sexual wellness treatment options.

Understanding how it works

Hormone therapy replenishes estrogen or testosterone in the body. While individuals who are undergoing a sexual transition may benefit from hormone therapy, it is most commonly used for men who have low testosterone levels and women who are going through menopause. The side effects of both problems often result in low sex drive, discomfort during intercourse and anxiety or depression.

General practitioners administer hormone therapy in several different ways. Some of these ways include oral medication, skin patches, gels, creams, sprays and injections—prescriptions for which require a thorough evaluation. In some cases, one treatment type may be better than others. When starting treatment, there is typically a period of trial and error in which each option is tested to determine which one works best for each patient. For example, some individuals may be sensitive to topical creams, so medication may be the better option. Likewise, those who prefer to not take oral medications can use a gel or lotion to introduce the right hormones into their bodies.

Safety concerns

In general, hormone therapy is said to be safe when it is performed by a licensed general practitioner. However, it is important to understand that not every treatment option will be safe for every individual. For example, individuals who have breast or endometrial cancer cannot undergo hormone therapy at all, and men and women who have a history of strokes are advised to avoid hormone therapy. Additionally, some people have a higher risk of developing problems as a result of hormone therapy. Being aware of the risks can be helpful when considering hormone therapy.

Associated risks

  • Increased risk of blood clots and stroke
  • A higher chance that gallbladder or gallstone problems will occur
  • Increased risk of heart problems
  • A higher probability that cancers will develop

Aside from the health risks, there are also some unpleasant side effects of hormone therapy that should be reviewed and considered before treatment. Women may experience irregular spotting, tenderness in the breasts, headaches, monthly bleeding and mood swings.
